WebApr 11, 2024 · The fort was one of five built on top of Portsdown Hill between 1860 and 1868 to protect Portsmouth from possible French attack. The then prime minister Lord Henry Palmerston ordered for the fort to be built as part of ‘Palmerston's Folly’ - a civil defence across the hill built in 1861 to defend the city from sea and land attack. WebMar 21, 2024 · Fort Purbroook is one of several "Palmerston Forts" built in the 1860s to protect Portsmouth and is around 1.5 miles east of Fort Widley. Both Forts are Grade II* listed and now operated by the Peter Ashley Activity Centres Trust.
